Undoubtedly, eBay is the largest auction site on the web
and thousands upon thousands of dollars are made each day in sales.
Much of this income goes to individual sellers or vendors. And the best news is that there’s always room to
accommodate new sellers.
Whether you’re thinking about setting up a small part-time business for side income or creating a full-time eBay business, there is still enormous potential to
make money on eBay.
Getting started
The initial puzzle for most eBay prospects is how and where to get started. Where do you get stuff to sell? And
how can you grow as a seller and reach
PowerSeller status?
While almost anyone can become a seller on eBay, not everyone will ultimately succeed. As you might realize when
you sign up as a seller, it takes more than just having a product to sell to make real profits on eBay.
The best way to get started is by auctioning off some of your unwanted items you have at home. This is a good
way to get a feel of things on eBay; how selling is done and what most people are buying on the site.
The best thing with this approach is that it is risk free; you invest little or nothing so you have nothing to
lose. If you’re going to invest in stock to sell, you’ll want to get some basic selling experience before you ‘dive
in at the deep end’.
Choosing items to sell
Now, after getting a feel of what selling on eBay is all
about, you need to decide on the items you’re going to stock up. Of course, there’s no limit to what you can sell
(apart from the banned items).
However, for you to make a reasonable amount of sales, you’ll want to be more specialized in what you sell and
cut out a name for yourself in that particular type of product.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to keep your product line narrow; on the contrary, it could be very
wide. For instance if you choose to sell toys, there’s plenty of variety to keep you going for a while without
selling the same item twice.
You do need to select a product that is popular and this calls for some good research to identify what is
selling and what is not. The advanced search feature on eBay is a good tool for this kind of research. Simply put,
if you don’t know what sells at a particular time, you can make huge loses buying the wrong stock.
Identify a supplier
There are two options here: dropshippers or wholesalers.
When you choose dropshippers, you’ll not hold any stock; they hold it for you, so you actually pay for items
once they’ve been bought by customers. With a wholesaler however, you’ll need to have space to keep your stock and
you’ll have to manage the inventory yourself, and of course money to pay for the stock in advance.
Pricing
The prices you set for your items may have a direct impact on your sales. Obviously, don’t expect to make
reasonable profit when you sell items in the $5-$10 price range. On the other hand, don’t go for pricey items so
that you make a big profit, go for your calling.
Build a solid reputation
This is the most important factor that determines long term success on eBay. If you want to sell items that will
really make you a millionaire on eBay, you need some solid reputation. Reputation on eBay is determined by the
feedback feature.
No buyer can be willing to pay for a $10,000 item if your feedback score is low. Sellers with ‘PowerSeller’
status make more money than any other category of sellers on eBay so if you want to make serious money on eBay,
strive for that status.
This is essentially how to make money on eBay. There’s so much more involved and at times, a bit of shrewdness
and creativity is necessary to succeed.
